Weekend Reads!

Hey guys! It’s the weekend! Which in retrospect doesn’t mean much to me since I’m graduated and unemployed…anyway I thought you might like to know what I’m reading this weekend. I have two books on the go right now and they are:

gracelingAuthor: Kristin Cashore

Publisher: Gollancz

Genre: Fantasy

Summary: In a world where people born with an exceptional skill, known as a Grace, are both feared and exploited, Katsa carries the burden of a skill even she despises: the Grace of killing.

Feared by the court and shunned by those her own age, the darkness of her Grace casts a heavy shadow over Katsa’s life. Yet she remains defiant: when the King of Lienid’s father is kidnapped she investigates, and stumbles across a mystery. Who would want to kidnap the old man, and why? And who was the extraordinary Graced man whose fighting abilities rivalled her own?

The only thing Katsa is sure of is that she no longer wants to kill. The intrigue around this kidnapping offers her a way out – but little does she realise, when she takes it, that something insidious and dark lurks behind the mystery. Something spreading from the shadowy figure of a one-eyed king… (Via Goodreads)

winnie the poohAuthor: A. A. Milne

Publisher: Egmont UK

Genre: Children’s Classics

Summary: A.A. Milne’s ‘Winnie-the-Pooh’ stories need no introduction. They have been loved by generations of children ever since Pooh, Christopher Robin, Piglet, Rabbit, Owl, Kanga and Roo, and Eeyore made their first appearance. (Via Goodreads)

Hopefully, I’ll get at least one of these finished! I’d love to know what all of you are reading this weekend too! Leave a comment and let me know!

Life Update

Hello everyone! I really hope you’re still here otherwise I’m talking to myself and thats just awkward and concerning on a lot of levels…Anyway, update, not in fact dead, in case some of you were wondering, for the last few weeks (months) I’ve been in the throws of dissertation writing and I’m happy to report; I am finally finished!

Now, my life consists of lying in bed and waiting for all the job offers to role in…what I’m saying is I’ll be in bed for awhile which means plenty of time for reading again! So blogging can resume! Thousands of you are cheering right now, I know, I can tell. (Please let me live in this fantasy world)

So, to sum up: Finished Dissertation, Finished College, Tragically Unemployed, More Reading, More Blogging!

I will see you with a post tomorrow!

2015 Resolutions: Classics

So if any of you read my Top Ten New Years Resolutions/Goals post you will know that I wanted to read five classics in 2015 and if you didn’t read that post I want to read five classics in 2015…there now we’re all up to speed! 🙂

Now, I have a terrible habit of buying books and never reading them, especially when it comes to the Green Penguin Popular Classics that usually retail for under €3 so this year i decided that I will finally start to read some of them. I only picked five because I’ve got some other challenges I want to complete as well this year so without further ado here are the classics I hope to read in 2015!

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte

jane eyre

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

pride and prejudice

The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger

the catcher in the rye

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

the great gatsby

1984 by George Orwell

And there you have it! Hopefully I will get all five of these read (More than likely I’ll only read two but hey at least I’m trying!)

Late Christmas Gift Guide

So it’s Christmas and that means only one thing: celebrating the birth of the baby Jesus by giving the people you love presents. 😀 Now, I know some people are really organised when it comes to present buying but some people are also really last minute so here are some bookish and non-bookish gift ideas for those last minute people!

1) A Personalised Decoration!

I got a couple of people these for Christmas. They’re just cute little stocking stuffers and they make great momentos and they will last forever. There available in most shopping centres (at least they are in Ireland) are pretty cheap and take only a few minutes to personalise.

2) Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

This is the perfect book to get anyone who is looking to start reading fantasy. It’s a fantastic read with an incredible female protagonist and the series just keeps getting better and better.

3) A Pop Vinyl Figure

I love Pop Vinyl Figures. They are tiny and cute and make excellent stocking stuffers! And since there are so many now it’s almost impossible not to find your favourite character whether it be Dany from Game of Thrones, Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz or the Supreme herself Cordelia Foxx from American Horror Story.

4) The Time Turner

I recently picked up this little beauty for myself in Hamleys and I am beyond in love with it! It comes with the really nifty (yes, I said nifty) display case so it can either be ornamental and really liven up your bookcase or you can wear it as jewellery. The time turner itself is beautiful and while it may not be the cheapest of gifts it would definitely bring a smile to a Harry Potter fan’s face.

5) Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins

Anne and the French Kiss and rest of the series is cute, fluffy and infinitely adorable and is the perfect gift for any contemporary reader or your friend who is a big romantic comedy buff. If they’re not a big reader this book is sure to convert them!

6) A Mug

I am a huge tea drinker so I love getting cute and funky mugs for presents. Right now Urban Outfitters have a really great selection including this Game of Thrones inspired mug! Stuff it with some sweets, some satchels of hot chocolate maybe a baby Baileys, wrap a bow around it and you are good to go!

7) All the Movies!

2014 was a great year for book to film adaptions we had everything from The Imitation Game (which you should definitely check out) to Mockingjay to Wild. So why not pick up a DVD, grab some popcorn and sweet treats and have a Christmas movie night with your best book buddy?

8) Christmas Jammies

My favourite thing about Christmas is receiving or buying Christmas Jammies! They are always so fluffy and so cute and I love opening mine every Christmas Morning!

9) My True Love Gave To Me edited by Stephanie Perkins

This is a great festive book buy. Not only is full of adorable Christmas stories it is one of the most beautiful books to be released this year! Guaranteed to make your friend/family member a happy reader this Christmas!

10) Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor

This was one of the best books I read this year and I would definitely recommend it to all my book friends, especially those who love fantasy! It is a fantastic read and a perfect Christmas present.

11) Yes Please by Amy Poehler/ Not That Kind of Girl by Lena Dunham/Everyday Sexism by Laura Bates

For the Feminist in your life I would definitely recommend one, or all if you’re feeling generous, of these three books! They are all written by incredible women and all discuss things that I think are important for young women to read and learn. I would love to have gotten any of these books for Christmas so I think a lot of others will too.

12) The Cuckoos Calling by Robert Galbraith

For all those crime lovers out there the Comoran Strike series by Robert Galbraith is amazing and definitely worth a read. The Cuckoo’s Calling is great and The Silkworm is even better!

13) The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon

The Shadow of the Wind has always been and will always be one of my favourite books. The story follows Daniel, a young boy who becomes obsessed with solving the mystery of the disappearance of his favourite author and the systematic burning of all his books. It is a sensational novel and would make a fantastic Christmas gift.

14) A Charm Necklace

You can’t really go wrong with jewellery when your buying for that special someone and right now Pandora have some really adorable book charms. So I’d buy a little chain and pop on a charm and you have an adorable and very bookish necklace.

pandora15) Boxsets

Everyone loves a good boxset because everyone loves binge watching especially at Christmas! At the moment HMV have some great deals on some fantastic box sets. Homeland season 1 is only 12.99 and the entire Harry Potter series is only 19.99. Let’s be real kids thats a pretty good deal!

And that kids is the end of my Christmas Gift Guide. If you are a last minute shopper I hope you got some good ideas and I hope you all get some fantastic presents this year and have a wonderful, happy Christmas!

Weekend Reads

So, I have just finished my (last) first week at university, I’ve settled into my new apartment (with wonderfully shitty internet) and I have started reading once again. So, I figured while my internet is connected I might as well write a little post and tell you all what I am reading this weekend.

I am currently reading two books and they are:

cindereveryday sexism

I am currently on page 154 of Everyday Sexism and it is incredible! Without even finishing it I know it’s a book that I will be recommending to everyone – men and women alike.

I have yet to start Cinder but I will definitely be cracking it open today and I am really, really looking forward to it as I’ve only ever heard good things!

So, what about the rest of you? What are you all reading this weekend?

The Liebster Award

I was nominated for the Liebester award by the lovely Legal Reader and although I am very late in getting this post up I’m still very appreciative of the nomination! Thank you!

Rules are:

1) Answer 11 questions about myself;

2) Ask your nominees 11 questions;

3) Nominate 11 blogs to pass on the award by linking to their blog and then letting them know about the nomination.

And her questions were:

1) If you could live in any fictional ‘verse, beside Harry Potter, what would it be?

Okay, Harry Potter is always my default for this but since Hogwarts and Diagon Alley is excluded I think I would like to live in the Night Circus Universe. I mean, magic, fancy dresses and the best damn circus in the world? Yes, please!

2) Have you gotten around to A Song of Ice and Fire series?

I have read the first book and I have seen every episode of the TV Series…I do plan on reading the rest just not when I have to write a dissertation!

3) Do you prefer to see people or art on the book covers?

It depends. I have a resounding hatred for the covers of Vampire Academy and Bloodlines but then I really like the Throne of Glass covers and the Lux covers. So it depends on how well it’s done…if it’s stock photography however I do believe it should be burned. Sorry, Ray Bradbury.

4) Do you listen to music while you read?

No, I used to but if it was a particularly catchy song I’d wind up singing along and getting distracted so nope don’t read and listen to music anymore.

5) Is there a story you want to read that hasn’t been written yet?

Yes! So many but maybe one day I’ll write it myself so I won’t say what it is 😛

6) Do you eat or drink while you read?

I drink tea sometimes but most of the times i get too engrossed in the book and forget that it’s there and by the time i remember it’s stone cold, so…not so much.

7) What’s the strangest place you ever read in?

I don’t think I’ve ever read anywhere strange…I read at a funeral once…not like when the person was being buried but afterwards at the wake…does that count?

8) Your favorite villain gives you a choice: save the fictional world that they’re a part of by killing the hero and be stuck there forever or go back home and the entire world and everyone in it is destroyed. Which do you chose and why?

Kill the hero! because my favourite villain is Voldemort and the hero is Harry and Harry’s a horxcrux so he’d just come back and kill Voldemort anyway. Boom!

9) Favourite childhood book?

The Velveteen Rabbit is my favourite children’s book…although I technically wasn’t a child when I read it!

10) Do you follow publishing houses for updates?

I follow a couple on twitter and some on Tumblr but most of my updates really come from book blogging, Youtubers or Goodreads.

11) What made you get into reading in the first place?

Apparently my mom used to bring me to the library every week when I was little…I don’t remember this, I remember being taken to the video shop every week when I was little…but I’ll say it was my mom and her library trips.

My Questions for nominees!

1) Why Did You Start a Book blog?

2) Favourite Book of all time?

3) You’re throwing a dinner party, you can invite anyone you want, who are the five people eating dinner with you?

4) Have any of your Ships ever sunk?

4) What is Your Favourite and Least Favourite Book Adaption?

5) What’s On Your TBR Pile Right Now?

6) Paperbacks or Hardbacks?

7) Do You Have a Favourite Book Quotes or Quote About Books?

8) Do You Own Any Bookish Swag? (Take Pictures if You Can!)

9) If You Could Be Any Character From A Book Who Would You Be?

10) What Characteristics Do You Look for in a Book Boyfriend?

11) What Book Would You Re-write if You Could?

The People I’m Nominating Are:

Once Upon A Bookish Time

And everyone else I want to nominate has already been nominated! I think… This is optional so don’t feel obligated to take part and sorry if you’ve already been nominated!

The Taylor Swift Book Tag

The Taylor Swift Book Tag is an original tag created by The Book Life. Now I wasn’t tagged by anyone to do this but it’s a book tag that features T-Swizzle and she’s my girl so here I am. So this tag is basically taking Taylor Swift songs and matching them to books!

So let us begin!

1) We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together – Series I was in love with but later wanted to Break Up With

There are a few series that I read that I sort of fell out of love with but the one that stands out the most for me will always be the Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer. Like everyone else in the world I was obsessed with these book for a long time but as I got older I started to realise that there was a hell of a lot of problems with them and the characters and eventually I just had to let it go!

we are never ever

2) Red – Pick a Book with a Red CoverHalf Bad: cover of first novel by Sally Green, predicted to be next Harry Potter or Twilight Saga

If you follow me on instagram or Tumblr you’ll see I own a lot of red books but I think I’ll let Half-Bad by Sally Green take centre stage this time, mostly because I have not read it and I really, really need to!

3) The Best Day – Pick a Book That Makes You Feel Nostalgic

The Princess Diaries series by Meg Cabot always brings me back to the good old days of messing around with my friends, talking about Mia and Michael for far too long and then complaining about how the movie was nothing like the books while still loving the movie! Just good, good times!

4) Love Story – Pick a Book with Forbidden Loveworld after

So, so many choices for this. At first I was tempted to pick Clary and Jace from City of Bones through City of Ashes but then I realised I needed to save them for a later question! So I racked my brains and eventually I decided on Penryn and Raffe from Penryn and the End of Days series by Susan EE.

I love these two. They are so sarcastic and funny together and I know technically nothing has happened between them but they are totally in love and it’s wonderful and it’s going to be so painful because human and angel during a civil war between humans and angels and worse still this angel arrested other angels for loving humans! So much forbiddenss!

5) I Knew You Were Trouble – Pick a Book with a Bad Character You Couldn’t Help But Love

i knew you were trouble

I have got to give this one to the Darkling from the Grisha series by Leigh Bardugo. I mean he’s called the Drakling for fuck sake! I should have known he was going to be evil! But of course I was blinded by his charms and even when he showed his true evil, dark colours I still loved him. I even wanted him to win a little bit. I know, the shame.

6) Innocent – Pick a Book That Someone Ruined the Ending For You.

Who can forget when Kanye West interrupted Swiftie during her VMA acceptance speech? No one likewise I can never forget when my friend spoiled the fate of Robb Stark from a Game of Thrones for me. I wasn’t reading the books or even watching the series at the time so it didn’t particularly bother me but then months later I was obsessed with the series, reading the books, declaring Robb one of my favourite characters and flashback! Needless to say I was not happy!

7Requiem by Lauren Oliver) Everything Has Changed – Pick a Character Who Goes Through Extensive Character Development.

I’m going to give this one to Lena Halloway from the Delirium Trilogy by Lauren Oliver. Lena starts the trilogy believing that love is a disease and she cannot wait to get her treatment and be paired off and at the end of the trilogy she’s a rebel, a spy and tearing down the walls that separate people all in the name of love and freedom. It’s a rather big 180!

8) You Belong With Me: Pick You’re Most Anticipated Book Release

I know that Heir of Fire is technically out but my copy is still in the post so I’m still anticipating it’s release to me! I’ve been counting down the days for Heir of Fire and I am so excited to read about Celaena and Chaol again and ugh I just wish I had it now!

you belong with me

9) Forever and Always – Pick Your Favourite Book Couple

So many couples to pick and love. Celaena and Chaol, Penryn and Raffe, Bellamy and Clarke, Harry and Ginny, Ron and Hermione, Rose and Dimitri – I adore them all but I think the first book couple to really get me emotionally invested and keep me emotionally invested was Clary and Jace from the Mortal Instruments Series by Cassandra Clare.

loved these two! So much I was even shipping incest – do you realise how good a book has to be to ship incest? Thankfully life worked out and these two are happy and going to get married and have very sarcastic babies! (They will!)

clary jace

10) Come Back, Be Here – A Book You Would Never Lend Out For Fear of Missing it too Much.

Harry Potter. I would never ever ever give anybody a copy of my Harry Potter Books! Just no! I’d never risk it! My friends are animals! They’d spill something or worse lose them or never return them and Harry has suffered enough!

harry potter gif

And that Dear Friends is the end of the Taylor Swift Book Tag! I’m not going to tag anyone directly because I don’t know if people are T-Swift fans or not although in my opinion there are only two types of people – People who like Taylor Swift and Liars – so if you are a Swift fan I tag you and be sure to link me your tags so I can check them out!
